Needle Holder (Mayo-Hegar)
Mayo-Hegar needle holders are ratcheted, scissor-like instruments with short, serrated jaws designed to securely grasp surgical needles during suturing. The textured jaws prevent needle slippage, and the ratchet mechanism allows the surgeon to lock the needle in place.
Uses: Used to hold and pass suture needles through tissues in various surgeries, including general, orthopedic, and gynecological procedures.
Sizes:
- Common lengths: 15 cm, 18 cm, 20 cm, or 26 cm, depending on the tissue depth and needle size.
- Jaw width: Typically 2–3 mm, designed for standard suture needles.
Material: Stainless steel, often with tungsten carbide inserts in the jaws for enhanced grip and durability.
